Those aren't the words of a historian or political scholar. They are the words of 15-year-old East Helena High School sophomore Liam Turner.  At today's Lewis and Clark County Commission meeting, Chairman Tom Rolfe introduced Liam, a member of the EHHS Speech & Debate team, and invited him to present his competition speech on the Declaration of Independence.

Commissioner Rolfe first heard Liam deliver the speech at a local Toastmasters Club meeting, where Liam was practicing in preparation for competition. Recognizing both the quality of Liam's work and the importance of encouraging young people who engage seriously with our country's founding principles, Chairman Rolfe invited him to share the speech with his fellow commissioners and the community.

And Liam did not disappoint.

His speech explored the Declaration, not simply as a historic document, but as the product of “philosophy, suffering and hope”—ideas that have endured for 250 years and continue to challenge each generation to consider what liberty, equality and self-government mean.

The impact of Liam's presentation was apparent when the Deputy Sheriff who followed him to the podium remarked that it was difficult to follow a presentation like that—and that he wished “more young people had the passion that Liam has.”

Chairman Rolfe may have summed up the morning best. Noting that he and his fellow commissioners won't be here for the Declaration's 300th anniversary, he told Liam:  “The country is in good hands with young people like you.”

Congratulations, Liam. At only 15, you've already reminded a room full of adults that the principles expressed 250 years ago don't belong only to history. They belong to the generations entrusted with carrying them forward.
